3D Web Browsing with uBrowser

webbrowser.jpg

Developed by Callum Prentice, Ubrowser is a web browser that demonstrates the power of embedding the Mozilla Geko rendering engine using LibXul into a browser. The web content is first retrieved and then it is rendered onto 3D geometry using Open GL. Ubrowser is compatible with almost every website that works with Firefox 1.5 and the executable as well as the source code are openly available to download at http://ubrowser.com. We tried out Ubrowser and we were very impressed with the speed of the rendering, the interactivity preserved, and the fact that it worked with just about every site we tried it out with. Ubrowser demonstrates 3D web browsing is no longer a concept and is now a reality. Check below for some more screens of Infinity Labs using Ubrowser.

As you can see above, Ubrowser allows you to chose the type of 3D geometry to display the object on. In this case we chose a cube however there is also a sphere as well as a flag to chose from. You can also browse the web on a plainer surface as shown below.

This really shows where the future of web browsing is going. Even though its just a cool ap now im sure in 3 or 4 years this will be implemented into all browsers.

Yes! Because nothing helps me find and use information faster than mapping it to a sphere and making it illegible.

In 3 or 4 years the internet will be forcibly injected into your screaming face, and those who resist will be locked in boxes.

No offense, but…why would a person want to do this?

I think it is the future applications this can be used with. Like having 3D tabbed browsing so you can move web pages in back and in front of one another to save space.

I’ve seen desktop navigators like this, they are definately overkill for the average user but if you find yourself with cluttered space having an extra dimension can be a godsend. I think it also helps me to think in a 3-d world, seems more natural.
    end long comment.

Maybe now we can have an interface like the movie “Hackers”. We don’t need any text on the screen at all, everything is filed away in a Dewy Decimal-like type card catalogue where we type about 60 WPM on our keyboards but no text, only an enhanced 3D GUI is used to almost instantly and 100% accurately find any information that we need. Now we can hack ATMs and make them spit out money (because they are programmed to be able to do that), turn the lights on and off at random places, and of course find the password on some evil corporations locally hosted intranet.

I forgot to add that we can use Angelina Jolie’s uber-fast 14.4 modem in her wicked awesome Linux based laptop.

I can see the point of having a duodecahedron so you can peruse 12 porn sites at once, but what else would it be good for? This is a solution looking for a problem. Not all new gimmicks are really useful, at this moment anyway.

regarding the movie ‘Hackers’, password screens should all be in red 30-point Courier font and say ENTER PASSWORD: You Have 12 Seconds.

Also, they should introduce half-face lighting as part of the building regulations. That way when we enter the password half our faces would be in atmospheric darkness, and we could all make looks of acute concentration as we moodily puff dog-ended ciggerettes.

    Also please
